Pineapples are a tasty source of certain nutrients and an enzyme capable of digesting protein. On the other hand, they are relatively high in calories and they contain natural acids that can cause mouth sores. Pineapple is relatively high in fructose -- or fruit sugar -- compared to other fruits, but it also contains sour compounds such as malic acid and citric acid. Pineapple’s sweet and sour taste makes it a versatile fruit that complements most meats, salads, dairy products and desserts.
Imports of fresh pineapples into the European market have stabilised at around 900 thousand tonnes in recent years. In 2017, there was a good supply of pineapples and volumes to Europe reached 942 million tonnes. Shipping and storing pineapple requires the temperature to be between 7°C to 12°C, and no longer than a 3 to 4 week period. When pineapples are being exposed to temperatures below 7°C chilling injuries will occur. Smaller exporters from developing countries must seek to distinguish themselves with quality, price, and sustainability. There are also opportunities in new varieties that have advantages with regard to logistics, convenience and the increasing attention given to flavour.
